A Personal Update from Publisher of Siskiyou News: Why We’re Fighting to Keep Local Journalism Alive

-website is redesigned, we hope you like the changes-

Dear Valued Subscribers, Readers, and Followers of Siskiyou News,

As we enter December, I want to start by expressing my profound gratitude for your unwavering support of our grassroots community news. Siskiyou News is more than just a publication. It’s a lifeline for local stories: from county board decisions, city council updates, school sports triumphs, community calendars, obituaries, and the events that bind us together in Siskiyou County. Your involvement keeps us going. Today, I’m sharing a heartfelt update with full transparency about our challenges, my renewed commitment, and how we move forward together.

When I published what I thought would be our last issue, the responses were immediate and telling. The very first call I received was from another business sniffing around for my advertising contacts listโ€”like sharks sensing blood in the water. It was a stark reminder of the cutthroat side of this industry. But the second call? That one hit differently. It was from a reader in Mount Shasta, in tears, asking, “What is this world coming to?” She shared how elders and others not tied to social media or the internet rely on us for a simple bit of local news. After calming down, she even told me she’d visited her husband’s grave to pray for me. That’s the raw truth of it: just because some are plugged into social media doesn’t mean everyone is. In reality, about 60% of the nation isn’t on social platforms, leaving real gaps in information access. My desire is to bridge those gaps with a straightforward printed publicationโ€”one you can pass along, clip and save articles about loved ones, or preserve for future generations.

Something I truly enjoy is diving into old newspapers from yesteryear. It’s a tangible connection the internet can never replace. That’s my mission: preservation, by linking elders to adolescents and ensuring our community’s stories endure in print.

Many of you noticed our paywall has been down since October 16th. This stemmed from the tough realities of running an independent outlet. For years I’ve gone without a paycheck investing every ounce of time, energy, and resources to keep the news coming. The business model I’ve been pursuing just isn’t sustainable amid skyrocketing costsโ€”from printing and distribution to digital maintenance. After much prayer, deliberation, and exploring every option, I’m resolute that Siskiyou News will continue. We are too essential to our rural community to stop now.

To make this sustainable and allow us to deliver even better coverage, we’re implementing key changes:

  1. Print Subscriptions: To cover the actual costs of printing and mailing, the annual print subscription will now be $112 (postage included). We’ll honor all current paid subscriptions at their original ratesโ€”no disruptions for you.
  2. Digital Paywall: The paywall is back up on siskiyou.news
It demands real money, time, and effort to maintain a secure online platform, it is crucial for funding our future operations and protecting our content.

These adjustments aren’t about profit. They’re about survival and growthโ€”enabling deeper reporting, more community voices, and the authentic grassroots journalism you count on. If you are able, please renew, subscribe, or consider a tax deductible* donation today. Your support directly empowers us to hire administrative help freeing me to focus on what I do best, gathering and sharing the news that matters.

To highlight the impact Siskiyou News has, I’m including letters from two steadfast supporters who articulate why local journalism like ours is irreplaceable.

Letter from Bob Kaster:

How much is it worth to you to have a local newspaper that actually keeps you up to date on whatโ€™s happening here in our county? How much do you care about what our county board of supervisors and city councils are up to? How interested are you in knowing how well your kidsโ€™ and grandkidsโ€™ school sports teams are doing? How important is it for you to have access to a community calendar to keep you abreast of upcoming events, activities, and performances throughout the county? How much do you pay attention to obituaries?

Old timers (like me) can remember the โ€œolden daysโ€ when the Siskiyou Daily News was actually (1) daily and (2) published in Siskiyou County; but those days are long gone.

For the last three years, Jay Martin, a lifetime Siskiyou County resident, has strived to fill the void with his Siskiyou News publications, and has done a damn good job. If you are reading this right now, it probably means that you are a subscriber and that you agree.

Iโ€™ve gotten to know Jay quite well during the past few years, and I know his habits. He only sleeps four hours a day, and when heโ€™s awake heโ€™s devoting all his time and energy to bringing you this publication. Besides gathering and writing the news he is also performing the administrative tasks of keeping his operation going, including the bookkeeping, accounting, and soliciting and keeping track of subscriptions. He simply canโ€™t keep on doing that. Itโ€™s impossible. But if he stops, his Siskiyou News publications will also stop, a tremendous loss for our county.

Whatโ€™s the answer? He needs to contract with a person to carry out the administrative tasks, freeing Jay up to do what he does best, gathering and writing the news. If this doesnโ€™t happen soon, the Siskiyou News publications will cease to exist, a terrible loss to us all.

So, if you care about preserving journalism in Siskiyou County, please help. What can you do? Renew or extend your subscription today, consider a one-time or recurring donation to support hiring administrative help, or spread the word to bring in new subscribers. Every bit counts toward keeping local news alive.

Letter from Mike Grifantini:

What is the future of news dissemination in our โ€œBrave New Worldโ€? What is the future of news distribution for small, rural communities? Our local newspapers have deteriorated to the point where they give scant information about Siskiyou County. So, where will people go to get the news in future years?

I for one, really appreciate what Jay Martin has been doing with Siskiyou News. Without his outlets, I would have to depend on risky alternatives. I might have to solely use word-of-mouth communication, even though it is very hit and miss and often full of inaccuracies. Or, I would have to use some other Facebook alternative, using public posts written by people that often have no idea what they are talking about. It is a real dilemma!

Jay has relentlessly searched out local news and events and has distributed that information to our population. Do people complain about the outletโ€™s political persuasion? Sureโ€”but then, in our polarized political landscape readers would complain no matter how the news or events were presented.

I wish that everyone would consider the value of keeping informed about local news and events. The cost to subscribe to or advertise in Siskiyou News is small considering its worth. It takes money to operate a news organization and people should not assume that their news will be given to them for free.

Please support Siskiyou News,

Mike Grifantini

Yreka

Bob and Mike’s words resonate deeply, reflecting the sentiments many of you have expressed. Siskiyou News bridges generations and fills voids left by fading traditional media. If you have questions, ideas, or want to contributeโ€”whether through subscriptions, donations, or sharing our storyโ€”please reach out. Let’s preserve our community’s voice for years to come.

With sincere appreciation,

Jay A. Martin
