Community Corner: McCloud’s American Legion Post Keeps Veterans Connected

A Hub of Camaraderie in Small-Town California

MCCLOUD, CA โ€” At 232 Broadway Avenue, the American Legion Post has become more than just a meeting hall for veteransโ€”it’s a bustling social center where military service members, their families, and supporters gather nearly every night of the week.

The Post’s calendar celebrates both service and community spirit. Every first of the month, veterans eat free at the “Be the One Dinner,” with the next one scheduled for Saturday, November 1st. The weekly rhythm includes Monday night football viewing parties, Wednesday tacos (yes, they know it’s not Tuesday) from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, Thursday bingo and football, and Saturday karaoke at 7 PM where everyone is encouraged to “bring your voice and make noise.”

Perhaps most meaningful is the monthly “Coffee and Conversation” gathering on the last Friday of each month, designed for veterans to simply spend time with one anotherโ€”a reminder that bonds of military service don’t end with discharge papers.

Special events are also on the horizon. The annual Turkey Shoot Bingo is set for Sunday, November 9th, 2025, with families invited to compete for turkeys and turkey baskets. On Veterans Dayโ€”November 11thโ€”The Legion Family will host a truck, car, and motorcycle parade followed by a soup lunch. Contact Judy Sarti at 916-201-7423 for details.

Notably, membership isn’t limited to veterans themselves. Spouses, children, and grandchildren of veterans are all welcome, acknowledging that military service impacts entire families.

In McCloud, where the population hovers around 1,000, the American Legion Post serves a function beyond its official mission. It’s a place where “thank you for your service” becomes tangibleโ€”a taco dinner, a bingo card, a shared song, a conversation over coffee.

In small-town America, community isn’t built in grand gestures, but in weekly tacos, monthly birthdays, and the simple act of showing up. CHECK US OUT! ARE YOU A VETERAN, A SPOUSE OR CHILD OR GRANDCHILD OF A VETERAN? YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO JOIN!
