The McCloud Community Services District will have two vacancies coming up this year on its Board of Directors which will be on the November ballot. MCSD Directors Michael Rorke’s and Chris Richey’s 4-year terms are up and they have both announced that they will run again. Both incumbents have been on the MCSD Board for two terms already.

Alan Barreca is the third candidate applying for the MCSD Board of Directors position.  Alan originally came to McCloud in 2000 and has been a permanent resident and homeowner for the past 5 years. “My wife and  I  are grateful to live in such a paradise with the quiet, beauty, and spiritual essence of Mount Shasta. It still has the same number of people that it had in 2000 when I first came here.”

Alan Barreca, now retired, graduated with a BS in civil engineering. He was a professional business owner and a licensed and bonded general engineering contractor. He served as a military officer in the Army as a post engineer, responsible for the maintenance of buildings and infrastructure. He served in Turkey, and at Fort Irwin in SoCal. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his service.

Barreca says that his work experience and education make him uniquely suited to serve on the MCSD board.  “I am very confident that  I can make a positive contribution to the effective and harmonious functioning of the board.   We have had a hard time retaining employees.  Amos just  recently left the district and it is interesting to note that we have not been able to retain a General Manager  for  more than five years.”

Barreca continues, “I am very humanitarian-oriented. My work experience includes establishing a nonprofit organization to repair homes for low-income families in Oklahoma. I did this as a volunteer without compensation. I want to be of service to this community because this is my home and I care deeply. I like making things better and also have experience working on boards.  I have served on the board of the McCloud Meadow Ranch Home Owners Association and currently, I participate with the Siskiyou County Homelessness Advisory Board.

Chris Richey, who is also running again for a 3rd term on the MCSD Board of Directors, says that a couple of the biggest accomplishments during her time on the board were the Rate Study so they can update the District’s vehicles and getting the grant to put a lid on the spring where the town’s water comes from.  Other accomplishments were getting the main water line from the spring to town buried under Mud Creek during the Mud Creek Diversion flood and getting the grant to upgrade Hoo Hoo Park’s playground.

Michael Rorke, also on the ballot this year for a 3rd term on the MCSD Board, says that his best accomplishment was making it mandatory for newly elected board officials to take the webinar classes so they can be educated on the workings of overseeing the infrastructure and the workings of the community and its government. His goal for this term is to have a good functioning District and knowledgeable directors. “Everyone brings something to the table. A well-functioning District will benefit the community with new Directors, a new era, and being optimistic looking towards our future.”

McCloud residents do have a say in the functioning of their community. The bi-weekly Services District Board meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 6 PM at the Scout Hall on Colombero Avenue in front of Hoo Hoo Park. The community is welcome to come and partake in their community and see what is going on firsthand.
