the Obituary of Donald Dean Meek

Don Meek was born in Yreka, California, to Gerald & Marvel Meek. The youngest of seven children, he was raised in Scott Valley, where he resided until joining the military.

As a member of the U.S. Armed Forces, he got his first taste of the world as an Army Motor Transport Operator in Europe at the end of the Korean War. The Colonel on base was so impressed with both Don’s skill behind the wheel as well as his personality, that he took Don on as his personal assistant, or aide-de-camp. As an honorably discharged veteran, he spent time in the reserves, as well.

Upon returning to Siskiyou County after his service in Europe, a young lady by the name of Ronda Cummins spotted this young man in uniform at the local fair & offered to buy him a beer. They would eventually marry & have four children – Sherri, Dona, Shane, and Dianna. Life would see the family relocate to the Reno, Nevada, area for many years, where Don would first join the Iron Workers Union, later starting his own janitorial business.

Eventually, he would return to Scott Valley, where he took great pride in being active in his community.

He was, for a time, a member of E. Clampus Vitus, as well as an active member of the American Legion. He also enjoyed being a participant in the local ‘Mountain Man’ chapter. Old flannels, buck skin leathers, fox pelt hat and black powder rifles were right up his alley and an activity he could often share with his final companion, Tina Chick.

Don’s greatest passion laid in his music. Playing his guitar & singing, whether it be for The Patterson Creek Band, the Wednesday Night Crew down at Bob’s Ranch House, or simply for a holiday treat with family, it always put a smile on his face & some spring in his step. It was a love & a talent that he never lost, that he never gave up on.

Upon his passing, Don joins his parents, all six siblings, as well as his daughters Sherri and Dianna. He is survived by his daughter Dona, son Shane, eight grandkids, 8 great-grandkids & many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at the Etna Cemetery on Saturday, October 19th, at 11:00 am.
