Obituary for Carol Ann Wilder

Carol Ann Modin was born January 28, 1937 in Portland, OR and crossed into Heaven April 17, 2026 in Mount Shasta, CA.  She committed her life to Jesus as an adolescent and stayed loyal to His calling until her last very last breath-she had a massive heart attack 1/15/24 and survived well after 10 miracle minutes of CPR! She often quipped that she died and came back to life! Carol graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1958 (BA in English and Fine Arts) and enjoyed debating on the college forensics team. Her red hair and sky blue eyes were a dead giveaway that stubbornness worked in her favor – most of the time! She met Roger Wilder as a teen in high school, often at Youth for Christ gatherings and naturally, both conveniently attended Seattle Pacific U. They started dating and were married on August 8, 1958 until Rogerโ€™s passing in 2016.  Their two marvelous sons were born in 1960 and โ€˜62 respectively: Scott (Pilar) live in Long Beach, CA and Chris (Linda) in Rocklin, CA, each with amazing daughters Chrislin (Justin) Rowland and Vanessa (Grant) Wunderlich. Carolโ€™s joy continued with great-grandsons Nathaniel and Jeremiah Rowland, both active boys who love bikes, snow, and weekends at their great grandmaโ€™s home in Mt Shasta.

Some unique memories for Carol were living for a  year in an Airstream trailer in Gainesville, FL as Roger studied for his Masters of Teaching degree, and she laughed at chasing lightning bugs although she was never keen on the humidity. Carol was a Junior high Fine Arts teacher in Milwaukie, OR for 8 years in the 1960s, then they moved to Palo Alto, CA from 1971-1998. Roger and Carol lived fully, taking their two sons traveling extensively: hiking, biking and skiing, while adopting various dogs and cats over the years. There were many camping and backpacking trips around the western US, Canada, and Mexico; cross-country road and motorcycle trips as far as the East Coast and up to Alaska, living for months in the remote far northern reaches of British Columbia. After spending part of a very cold winter in Yellowstone, Carol was glad that trip was in the rear-view mirror! With Roger as a school principal they took several long trips in Europe including a summer not only by train, but with Carol forging on with her moped, lugging luggage so the guys could โ€˜draftโ€™ behind her on their road bicycles!!    They made three trips to Peru where son Scott worked for two years as a missionary –and where he met and married his  Peruvian wife. Carol would often remark that son Chris and Linda married just six weeks later in Sacramento!   She was very involved in church missions since early in life and kept the zeal on the forefront of her decisions. In 1993, they went with a church group for a 3-week Christian sharing/teaching trip to rural Romania which gave them a real-life perspective on Gospel work overseas. Carol supported several ministries through prayer and resources, keeping up on correspondence with many that spanned over 40 years, often hosting house guests and numerous Bible studies.

With her love of art, Carol was talented as a semi-professional artist since the 1980โ€™s, painting both watercolors and pastels. Her paintings were often in galleries in Ashland, Oregon and Mount Shasta.  She was a longtime active member of Siskiyou Artists Association, garnering multiple Best-of-Show and 1st Prize ribbons in both Palo Alto and Siskiyou County. She loved Godโ€™s handiwork and always marveled at the beauty around their home in Mount Shasta.  It was obvious to all that she loved Christ, and she reflected that in her zeal for the Gospel to go forth and for her artwork to glorify God. Carol deeply loved her family, friends, her lap cats and loyal dogs, with the last one (Marcus) being perhaps her favorite.

After Roger retired, they settled in Mt. Shasta in 1998. Carol said she was done with major traveling, and she stayed quite contented in their lovely dream home facing the mountain. Many of us would say Carol was easily the most appreciative gal we have ever known, and some of us have stacks of her personal calligraphy thank you cards to prove it! You can bet she is now painting and marveling at the colors of Heaven promised by her Lord, Savior and King. Hallelujah! There is probably a โ€˜Thank Youโ€™ card in Godโ€™s mailbox, if He has oneโ€ฆ Join us for Carolโ€™s memorial service Saturday May 30, 2 pm at First Baptist Church Mount Shasta, CA.
