Obituary: Dorris Ann Wood

July 23, 1935ย ย –ย ย December 22, 2025

Dorris Wood passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 22, 2025, at her home in Yreka, with her good friend and caregiver, Ashly, by her side.

Dorris was born on July 23, 1935, in Pioneer, California, and was 90 years old at the time of her passing. One of seven siblings, she grew up with a deep love for the mountainsโ€”a love that stayed with her throughout her life. In her early teens, she moved to the Yreka area. After marrying Morris Wood, she lived for a short time in Weed and Hoopa before settling on the Shasta River, close to where it meets the Klamath River. With this, Yreka had become her forever home.

It was there that she raised her two sons, Robin and Frank, and welcomed countless nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives. Many learned to fish, hunt, and hike under her guidance, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.

Dorris worked in a variety of roles throughout her life, including bookkeeper for Floyd A. Boyd and Company, teller at Bank of America, and bookkeeper for a local grocery store chain. She later opened a womenโ€™s exercise facility called Dorrie Woodโ€™s Way, better known as โ€œThe Bod Shop.โ€ Eventually, she found her calling with the U.S. Forest Service, working as a timber cruiser and spending her days hiking the mountains she so dearly loved.

After retirement, rather than slowing down, Dorris began a new venture with her good friend Jose, doing fire fuel reduction on mountains and hillsides. Even in her seventies, her strength and endurance outpaced many younger workers.

Dorris is survived by her sons, Robin and Frank; her five grandchildren, Carena, Jason, Kristin, Nicole, and Brian; her four great-grandchildren, Ellowyn, Scarlet, Leighla, and Amani; and her youngest brother, Alfred.

A small Catholic service honoring Dorris will be held during the warmer spring months.
