CALIFORNIA BANS POULTRY AND DAIRY EXHIBITIONS DUE TO BIRD FLU OUTBREAK

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Department of Food and Agriculture has imposed an immediate statewide ban on poultry and dairy cattle exhibitions at fairs and shows following a severe outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu.

State Veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones announced the ban on January 7, 2025, citing the “devastating disease” that has infected over 700 dairy herds and 60 poultry flocks, affecting more than 15 million birds since August 2024. The crisis prompted Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency.

“This action is required to minimize the danger of exposing people and non-infected cows and birds to the disease,” Jones stated in an official memo.

The ban’s duration remains indefinite, impacting upcoming events like the Siskiyou Golden Fair scheduled for August. Fair CEO Cliff Munson confirmed they will maintain poultry and dairy cattle classes in their 2025 guide, hoping for the ban’s potential lift before the event.

Officials urge farmers to implement strict biosecurity measures, including preventing contact with wild birds and limiting equipment sharing. Owners observing suspicious symptoms should contact the CDFA Sick Bird Hotline at 866-922-BIRD.

The virus spreads through direct contact with infected animals and contaminated surfaces. In dairy cattle, symptoms include decreased feed consumption, respiratory issues, and sharp drops in milk production. Infected poultry may exhibit sudden death, breathing difficulties, and neurological symptoms.
