McCloud Market: Where Community and Commerce Thrive

Since 1971, the McCloud Market has been a cornerstone of the McCloud community. The DeBon family took ownership after the McCloud Lumber Mill sold, with Reno and Amber DeBon stepping into leadership roles in 2011. Today, with a staff of 15, the market does more than keep the people of McCloud fed – it nurtures the very fabric of the town.

The market’s commitment to its customers goes beyond simply stocking shelves. Management and staff alike cater to individual needs, often sourcing specialized items upon request. Their community involvement is equally impressive: sponsoring local events, donating surplus produce to area farms, and providing unwavering support for McCloud’s sports teams and school programs. Most recently, they contributed all their ice to the local Beer and Wine Festival, exemplifying their dedication to community events.

To gauge the market’s impact, we conducted an informal survey of shoppers. The responses paint a picture of a beloved local institution:

Local McCloud Market shoppers, Kaydence Hunt, Rod Krueger, Larry Harpe, and Carolyn Glenn stopped for a picture at their local market as they stop to pick up a few items at their local market.

Carolyn Glenn, a regular volunteer cook for American Legion events, raves about the quality: “The meat at McCloud Market is the best in Siskiyou County.”

Rod Krueger, picking up gift cards, praises the staff and selection: “Everyone who works here is so helpful and friendly. They have whatever I need. I love our store. It’s so convenient.”

Jack Johnson, the meat cutter at the McCloud Market

The market’s commitment to service is personified by Jack Johnson, the resident meat cutter for the past 7 years. With two decades of prior butchery experience, Jack goes above and beyond his role. Marcia Ames, an out-of-town visitor, recounts how Jack helped her select a new ale to try: “He was so helpful and introduced me to something I wouldn’t have picked on my own. It was great! You don’t often see people going out of their way to assist a stranger like that.”

These testimonials aren’t coming from staff – they’re the unsolicited words of grateful community members. The McCloud Market doesn’t just serve its town; it’s an integral part of McCloud’s identity, embodying the spirit of a community that truly takes care of its own.

I always feel at ease when I shop at the Mccloud market, with helpful staff like Amber in produce and Peter and Mr. Johnson in the meat department who always cater to my specific preferences because they understand I can be choosy.
