Siskiyou Scenic Bicycle Tour 2024: A Resounding Success with Perfect Weather and Strong Turnout

The Siskiyou Scenic Bicycle Tour, held on May 18th and 19th, 2024, was a resounding success, attracting 366 enthusiastic cyclists over the two-day event. Participants were treated to perfect weather conditions, with a light breeze, temperatures hovering around a comfortable 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and a slight overcast sky that provided ideal riding conditions.

The event, which took place in the beautiful Siskiyou County, offered six different routes catering to cyclists of various skill levels and preferences. The routes ranged from the challenging 104-mile traditional Siskiyou Century ride, with its stunning scenery and 6,003 feet of elevation gain, to the more relaxed 21-mile all-pavement route that wound through parts of Shasta Valley and Montague.

The event also featured two gravel rides on Sunday, May 19th, sponsored by the Jefferson Mountain Bike Association. The 39-mile mostly gravel route over Greenhorn Summit, with its three steep hill climbs and 4,115 feet of elevation gain, proved to be a favorite among participants. The 63-mile mostly gravel route, with its impressive 6,474 feet of elevation gain, took riders over Greenhorn Summit into Ft. Jones, then over Scarface and back to the west side of Shasta Valley, offering breathtaking views and a truly memorable experience.

Participants praised the event’s organization, with multiple rest stops, sag wagon support: A sag wagon, (also known as a broom wagon or support and gear vehicle) is a vehicle that follows a group of cyclists, runners, or other athletes during an event. Its purpose is to provide assistance to participants who are unable to continue due to injury, fatigue, mechanical issues, or other problems.). A end-of-ride meal that provided a perfect opportunity to relax, refuel, and share stories with fellow cyclists. The event’s start and finish location at Upper Greenhorn Park in Yreka is a great central location and overall atmosphere, with a police escort through the town for the Saturday rides adding a touch of excitement and camaraderie.

The Siskiyou Scenic Bicycle Tour 2024 showcased the best of Siskiyou County, with its incredible scenery, challenging routes, and welcoming cycling community. The perfect weather conditions and strong turnout made for an unforgettable experience for all participants, cementing the event’s status as a must-attend for cycling enthusiasts on the West Coast.

As the 36th event continues to grow in popularity, organizers are already looking forward to next year’s edition, special thanks to the participants for making it a success.
