Please do your part to prevent new wildfires!
Redding, Calif., September 5, 2025 – Fire season is still in full swing, and this time of year brings the driest conditions to the forest. Hot, dry, and at times windy weather makes the landscape particularly susceptible to wildfire.
To reduce the risk of new fire starts, the Shasta-Trinity National Forest has implemented fire restrictions across much of the forest. These restrictions are a critical step in preventing human-caused fires and protecting public safety and natural resources.
Recently, Forest Service firefighters have responded to three human-caused wildfires. One of those – the Root Fire, located west of Castella and Dunsmuir – was caused by an escaped campfire.
“We want to remind everyone that fire restrictions are in effect on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest,” said Kevin Osborne, Fire Management Officer for the forest. “These restrictions prohibit campfires across a large portion of the forest and are intended to reduce the chance of human-caused fires interfering with recreation, threatening communities, or straining firefighting resources.”
Preventable fires like the Root Fire place added pressure on firefighting resources already stretched thin by dozens of lightning-caused wildfires across Northern California.
“We have been very busy responding to lightning-caused fires across the forest and the region,” Osborne said. “Every human-caused fire diverts resources from that effort. Please help us by following fire restrictions and only having campfires in designated areas with a valid campfire permit.”
