President Smith says, “The Garden Club will clean up public areas in town when asked to. Off season, we have guest speakers, go on field trips, and even tour other gardens. But it is nice to see the flowers bloom around town and know that it is part of what we do.”

The unincorporated town of McCloud is a big tourist destination, especially in the summertime. One of the town’s many organizations is the McCloud Garden Club, established in 1979, and it is a big part of the yearly McCloud Beautification Project.
Beating the predicted rain on Saturday, April 26th, many of the garden club members divided up into two groups to clean up the landscape around a couple of popular areas. It is partly a social thing to get together with others in the community who share the same passion for gardening and take pride in their community by making McCloud beautiful. One group attacked the landscape around the Scout Hall, which is a community building by the local park. They raked up the pine needles and leaves, pulled weeds, trimmed bushes and trees, and hauled the clippings down to the green waste area.
The other half of the garden club worked on the landscape around the Blue Star Memorial, which is on Highway 89 at the main entrance into the town of McCloud. The Blue Star Memorial was established in the late ’70s, early ’80s and is a tribute to the armed forces with a plaque stating so and a flagpole surrounded by daffodils and small flowering trees. The Garden Club originally bought and planted the flowers when they upgraded the Memorial in the early 2000s.

Next Saturday, from 10 am to 1 pm is cleanup day in McCloud. The Chamber, Garden Club, and Resource Center of McCloud are inviting the community to help participate in their annual beautification project, which will be followed by a potluck on Main Street in the heart of town. Hotdogs and sausages will be provided.
