AGRICULTURAL ALERT: CONFIRMED GLASSY-WINGED SHARPSHOOTER DETECTED ON GRAPE PLANT FROM REDDING COSTCO

Shasta County, CA – On June 5, 2026, one confirmed glassy-winged sharpshooter was found on a grape plant purchased at the Redding Costco location. Additional monitoring traps have been placed around the affected property to monitor for the potential spread and establishment of this pest.

Residents who purchased grapevines from any Costco store between April 21, 2026, and May 21, 2026, are strongly urged to contact their County Agricultural Commissioner.  Due to the number of positive finds throughout the state, the Shasta County Agricultural Commissioner would like to place monitoring traps near where the grapevines were stored or planted.

Do not return, transport, relocate, share, or give away the grape plants, and do not place plants in trash bins or compost containers. Contact the Shasta County Agriculture Department at (530) 224-4949 or email [email protected] to schedule inspection of the grape plants and receive guidance on preventing further spread of the glassy-winged sharpshooter.  Due to the serious nature of this pest, the Shasta County Agricultural Commissioner may ask to place monitoring traps on or near your property.

“Glassy-winged sharpshooters pose a serious threat to vineyards, agriculture, and backyard plants throughout Shasta County and nearby areas,” said John Ingram, Shasta County Agricultural Commissioner. “These insects spread the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which causes Pierce’s Disease and can kill grapevines and severely damage vineyards. We need the community’s help to prevent its spread. If you recently purchased grapevines from Costco, please contact the Agriculture Department immediately so we can monitor for this threat.  Early response is key for monitoring and controlling the spread of this pest and, to-date, we have only accounted for about 20% of the plants shipped to the Redding Costco.  We are asking any Shasta County resident who purchased a grape plant between the listed dates to contact our office as soon as possible.”
