Garden Gab: Ready, Set, Sow!

Indoor seed sowing is in full swing. Longer growing crops, such as onions, are already several inches tall and making progress. Various slow starting flowers and herbs are also underway. Very soon (within 2 to 4 weeks) tomatoes, pepper, and other crops that need a head start will be sown to allow enough time to yield fruit before the fall frost.

Starting seeds indoors is not for everyone. I did not do it for years. I purchased my veggie and flower starts from my local nursery. How did I get started growing my own seeds indoors?

It all started with tomatoes. I am a tomato junky. I LOVE tomatoes. I decided to start my own tomato plants when the local nursery could no longer sustain my escalating tomato habit. I wanted more unique and unusual varieties in my garden. And so it began…

I still do not start 100% of my plants. Some plants are simply not worth the trouble and more easily purchased. I consider the difficulty of propagation, time, cost, and availability. I plant about 4-5 flats of petunias every year. It is much easier and cost effective to purchase petunias than start my own seeds. At least it was. Last year when the cost of a flat of petunias went from $9.99 to $24.99, in addition to shrink-flation. Not only did the price go up, the tray size reduced by several inches resulting in less plants per flat. The cost of my annual petunia habit went from $40 to over $125. Needless to say this is way out of my plant budget. So guess who has two green thumbs and now starts her own petunia plants from seed? This gal!

This example is just one of many over my lifetime that led me from starting a few tomato plants to an entire corner of my home devoted to indoor seed starting. CAUTION: seed starting is addictive. A few tomato plants are the gate-way drug to petunias and then there is no turning back. If you have never started seeds indoors and want to, then start small and decide if it is for you. It can be very rewarding. If you have a small garden or no time to devote to plant sitting, then purchasing your plants if just fine too.

Started from broadcast seeding then transplant the more vigorous of the starts.

When you start seeds indoors you end up with a surplus of plants. You can never predict if all the seeds will germinate; therefore, you plant extra. And that folks is how my plant sale business began. This will be my 7th year of offering spring garden starts for sale. I specialize in tomatoes (of course), peppers, and herbs. For information on purchasing garden starts, send me an email [email protected]. I will send you the 2025 catalog, order form and ordering instructions. Order deadline is March 3rd.

Here’s to growing all the things,
Shannon
