HIGH-SPEED UTAH DRIVER LEADS NORTH STATE AUTHORITIES ON 70-MILE I-5 PURSUIT

– A Sunday morning high-speed pursuit spanning approximately 70 miles of Interstate 5 concluded successfully with one suspect in custody, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports.
The incident began at approximately 6:00 AM when Weed Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a black Honda with Utah license plates (U486R8) for Vehicle Code violations. The vehicle fled southbound on Interstate 5, initially traveling at 75 mph near Truck Village.
As the pursuit crossed into different jurisdictions, multiple agencies coordinated their response. Weed PD transferred control to Mount Shasta Police Department, who were later joined by CHP units. The suspect’s vehicle reached speeds varying between 75-95 mph, with officers reporting light traffic conditions throughout most of the pursuit.

CHP deployed aerial support, with helicopter H16 and airplane Air 11 providing overhead assistance. Law enforcement successfully implemented a spike strip operation near Wonderland Boulevard, striking the vehicle’s left-side tires. The disabled vehicle continued southbound, gradually decreasing speed to 25-30 mph near Pine Grove.
Officers then conducted a felony traffic stop with K9 unit support present. The suspect was taken into custody at approximately 10:10 AM, with CHP managing traffic control during the arrest procedure.
According to CHP traffic information, the original attempted stop was for violations of California Vehicle Code 22349(b) and 22173. The identity of the suspect has not been released pending formal charges.
The successful resolution involved coordination between Weed Police Department, Mount Shasta Police Department, CHP ground and air units, and Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. No injuries or accidents were reported during the incident. The pursuit route included: Redding, Weed, Mount Shasta, Dunsmuir, Castella, and Mountain Gate.
