It only took 50 years!
At the McCloud High School Loggers’ 50th alumni reunion last year, the senior and junior class of ’74 noticed that among the purple and gold championship banners lining the gymnasium ceiling since 1962, there was no banner from their undefeated season in the Evergreen League.
The Evergreen League includes Big Valley High School in Bieber, Butte Valley High School in Dorris, Dunsmuir High School, Hayfork High School, Happy Camp High School, Surprise Valley High School in Cedarville, and Tulelake High School. The Loggers also played in the Mid Valley Championship at Shasta College in Redding and beat the Williams High School Yellow Jackets 12-0 that season.
On Friday, six alumni football players and two cheerleaders from the class of 1973/74 returned to the gymnasium with a banner they had made representing their 1974 season to hang among the others.
School custodian and McCloud High graduate Todd Duarte accompanied those who came to add the banner to the two-story-high ceiling. It was a mini-reunion with everyone present wearing T-shirts they had made for the reunion in their school colors that said “Northern Section CIF Champions McCloud Loggers, Class of ’74.” Those present included team captain Stanley Nicholas, his high school sweetheart and wife, cheerleader Beth of Redding, Steve Boone of Bella Vista, Dan Boyle of Medford, Martin Nicholas of Weed, Peter Tolosano with his high school sweetheart and wife who was also a cheerleader, Diane of McCloud, and Bobby Martin of McCloud.
“I wish our whole team could be here today,” said Stanley Nicholas. “Our coach, Ray Hill, just passed two weeks ago. We are dedicating this to him.”
Beth Nicholas added, “This is well deserved. Sadly, it took 50 years, but these guys are still like family. I am so happy about this day.”
