Hubert Houston Meador, affectionately known as “Butch,” was born on July 16, 1944, in McCloud, California, to Norman and Ruby Meador. As the middle of three children, he grew up in Northern California and attended high school in McCloud. At the age of 17, Butch joined the U.S. Air Force, dedicating 20 years of service across the Continental U.S., Alaska, and Germany.
A Vietnam-era veteran, Butch served as an Air Policeman and Administration Technician, reaching the rank of Technical Sergeant. Among his honors were the Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1982, Butch settled in Burney, California, where he devoted himself to community service. He built the Washburn-Bue Baseball/Softball Field and enjoyed coaching youth sports. Following the passing of his first wife, Mary Juanita Ragar Meador, he relocated to Alaska in 1989, embracing his love for hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors.
Preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Ruby and sisters, Elizabeth and Elaine, Butch is survived by Nancy, his wife of 28 years, his children Cheri, Mary, Ivy, Shandra, and Chata, Alexander and Talon, Jennifer, Joshua, Justin, Robyn, Chad, and Debbie, as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends.
A celebration of Butch’s life and service will be held at the McCloud American Legion, Post 92, located at 232 Broadway Ave., McCloud, California, on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 2:00 PM. All who knew Butch are invited to attend. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the McCloud Cemetery.
