MT. SHASTA, Calif. — Residents looking to continue the beloved tradition of cutting their own Christmas tree can now purchase permits at several convenient locations throughout the Mt. Shasta and McCloud areas. Starting November 1st, five local retailers are authorized to sell Christmas tree permits for the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
In Mt. Shasta, permits are available at:
- The Fifth Season
- Ramshaw’s Ace Hardware
- Solano’s Do It Best Hardware
McCloud residents can obtain permits at:
- McCloud Outdoors and Gear Exchange
These authorized retailers are making it easier for local families to participate in this time-honored holiday tradition without having to visit Forest Service offices. Permits are priced at $10.00 per household, with a limit of one tree per permit.
Christmas trees gathered under the Shasta-Trinity National Forest permits must be cut on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
Customers should note that while these retail locations offer standard permits, they cannot process the free “Every Kid Outdoors” permits for fourth-grade students. These special permits must be obtained directly through Recreation.gov or Forest Service offices.
Permits can be obtained through the following methods:
· Online at Recreation.gov. A service fee of $2.50 will be charged in addition to the permit fee.
· At designated retail locations. Please contact the retail location to verify hours and availability. Unfortunately, retail locations are not able to provide the “Every Kid Outdoors” free permit for Fourth-grade students.
· At your local Shasta-Trinity National Forest Ranger District Office. Permits may be purchased in person, by calling with a credit card, or mailing a check. Permits and maps will be returned by mail. Please allow up to two weeks for processing.
All permits are valid through December 31, 2024, giving families ample time to select their perfect holiday tree. The Forest Service recommends reviewing cutting guidelines and designated areas before embarking on their tree-cutting adventure.
