Boar’s Head Expands Massive Recall of Deli Meats Due to Listeria Outbreak

On July 30, 2024, Boar’s Head Provisions Co., Inc. significantly expanded its recall of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The company is now recalling an additional 7 million pounds of products, following their initial recall on July 26.

The expanded recall includes 71 products under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names, produced between May 10 and July 29, 2024. These items encompass both meat for deli slicing and packaged products, with “sell by” dates ranging from July 29 to October 17, 2024.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that the recall is linked to a multistate outbreak of Listeria infections. As of July 30, 34 cases have been reported across 13 states, resulting in 33 hospitalizations and two deaths.

The contamination was discovered when a liverwurst sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria, can be particularly dangerous for pregnant individuals, those over 65, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, headache, and gastrointestinal issues.

FSIS urges consumers who have purchased these products not to consume them and to either discard them or return them to the place of purchase. Retailers are advised to clean and sanitize all surfaces and discard any open meats and cheeses in their delis.
