Roland Peters Hougham, long-time Siskiyou County resident, passed away at Madone Hospice House in Yreka, California, on July 29, 2024. He was 96 years old.
Roland was born on February 7th, 1928, in Grants Pass, Oregon to Don C. and Ruby L. Hougham. At the age of 16 he joined the Merchant Marines and served during World War II. On July 2, 1949, he married Ilene O. Kreder in McMinnville, Oregon. Their first home together was in Orick, California, where they started a long career in the log and lumber trucking business. From 1951 through 1953 they owned a farm in Dallas, Oregon where their two daughters were born, but soon decided to return to the trucking business in California. In 1954 they relocated to the Yreka, California area where he lived until his death. In 1967 they purchased a ranch and upon selling his trucking business moved to the ranch and built a new home. He enjoyed many hours of ranch work and watching the wildlife. He was a founding member of the Yreka Elks. He enjoyed boating, ocean fishing, restoring antique cars, and traveling in his recreational vehicle. Many happy summers were spent in Crescent City, California with winter respites in the California deserts.
Roland is survived by his daughters, Carlene Lenard of Bainbridge Island, Washington, and Karen Hougham of Yreka; grandchildren Gabriel Goossens in Prineville, Oregon, Brett Goossens in Emmett, Idaho, and Brittney Myers (Adam) in Seattle, Washington; great grandchildren, Branch and Canyon Goossens and Cora Myers.
He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Ilene Hougham, his father and mother, and his siblings; Virginia Lucas, Roy Hougham, and Darlene Franklin.
