Squaw Valley Riding Club has a Hoedown Roping Competition

The Squaw Valley Riding Club’s 10th Annual Whitey Jespersen Memorial Team Roping competition brought about a lot of cowboys to McCloud over the weekend. This is the largest event that the club puts on annually.

The three-day event included a barbeque and live music with the Front Porch Band from Lake Tahoe, and sixty head of cattle brought here from Jeramy Garner’s Cattle Company in Fort Klamath, Oregon. A tack store called the Bunkhouse was at the event for last-minute horse items or needs.

The heat and other events in the area like the junior rodeo kept the numbers lower this year though there was still a good turnout as a total of 200 (pick and draw) teams competed. A roping team consists of two riders; a heeler and a header. There are draws where they get a partner by a drawing and they can also pick a partners so they get to compete with different partners several times. The winners won cash and belt buckles.

“There is a lot involved in putting on an event like this,” says Peter Tolosano who is the chairman of this roping event. “Lining up volunteers to help with the food and drink booths, grooming the arena, getting insurance, a water tender truck and driver, handling the cattle and the gates, advertising, setting up and cleaning up, and more.

Whitey Jepersen’s widow, Donna, and her family faithfully have come to every roping competition. The public is invited to spectate.

Other public events that the Horsemen’s put on annually are the Dutch oven cookoff, a golf tournament, participating in the pub crawl, hosting regular trivia nights, crab feed, SuperBowl, Christmas, and a New Year’s Eve party.

Jesse Mason from Corning, with his wife and kids won four times as a heeler. This is his 3rd time coming to this roping event in McCloud. He will share all the winning belt buckles that he won with his family.
