SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. – A significant improvement project is set to begin on a crucial stretch of highway in northern Siskiyou County. Caltrans announced today that a $2.6 million repaving project on State Route 161 near the Oregon border will commence on September 22nd.
The project will cover a 2-mile section of SR-161 west of Tulelake, stretching from just west of South Merrill Road to slightly east of Hill Road. This vital route connects State Route 139 and US 97 just south of the Oregon border.
“This pavement project improves a section of State Route 161 that links State Route 139 and US 97 just south of the Oregon border in far northern California,” said Caltrans District 2 Director Dave Moore. “Starting the effort in late September affords the Department time to complete work and have this roadway repaved before winter arrives.”
The repaving work, fully funded by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, aims to provide a smoother ride for motorists and freight carriers in the area. Hat Creek Construction & Materials, Inc. has been contracted to lead the project, which is expected to be completed by late October, weather permitting.
Motorists should be prepared for some disruptions during the construction period:
- Asphalt recycling activities will begin on Sunday, September 22nd, at 9 p.m. and continue through Monday.
- One-way traffic control will be in effect Mondays through Fridays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily.
- Delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected.
- Temporary speed limit reductions will be in place.
In addition to repaving, the project will include striping and shoulder work to enhance overall road conditions.
Caltrans reminds drivers to exercise caution in the construction zone by slowing down, obeying temporary speed limits, and driving carefully around work areas. Real-time highway conditions are available on Caltrans’ QuickMap and the One-Stop-Shop for the Western U.S.
