Historic Archery Club Draws 550+ Competitors While Fueling Local Scholarships

YREKA, CA — The historic Siskiyou Bowmen archery club recently hosted their annual Foul Weather Shoot, drawing over 550 competitors from across the Pacific Northwest in a display of both archery excellence and community spirit.

Archers traveled from Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, and throughout California to participate in the prestigious event, which featured three ranges and 38 shooting stations designed to test participants’ skills in various challenging scenarios.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout,” said Denny Campbell, who has served as the club’s president for 25 years. “The weather cooperated, and the competition was both fierce and friendly—exactly what we aim for every year.”

The event comes at a significant time for the club, which has been a cornerstone of the archery community since its establishment in 1949. Throughout its 76-year history, Siskiyou Bowmen has dedicated itself not only to promoting the sport of archery but also to fostering the development of similar clubs throughout the region, including providing equipment loans to clubs in Shasta and Hoodoo near Sisters, Oregon.

Community Impact Beyond Archery

What distinguishes the Siskiyou Bowmen from many sporting organizations is their profound commitment to educational support. Over the past 15 years, the club has contributed an impressive $150,000 in scholarships, with 99% of those funds directly benefiting students in Siskiyou County.

The Foul Weather Shoot, along with the club’s Ryan D. Campbell event, serves as the primary fundraising mechanism for these scholarships, transforming recreational archery into educational opportunity for local youth.

“Our 250 members aren’t just here for the archery,” Campbell explained. “We’re building a community that supports healthy activities for children while investing in their future education.”

Local Business Support Crucial to Success

This year’s event faced potential disaster following recent storms that severely damaged access roads to the club’s facilities. Advantage Paving and Excavation stepped in with a major contribution, completely redoing the road to ensure the event could proceed safely.

“Without them, we could have had trailers and trucks stuck in the mud,” Campbell noted. “The crew brought in 15 loads of road base, a grader, and heavy equipment. Their support was absolutely critical.”

The club also acknowledged numerous other local businesses that provide consistent annual support, including Yreka Transfer, Solano’s, Evans Building & Excavating Inc., Siskiyou Sanitary, Basic Fencing, Premier Clearing Inc., and Pepsi Cola Mount Shasta.

As participants return home from this successful tournament, the Siskiyou Bowmen are already looking ahead to their next major event, scheduled for April 26th and 27th, 2025.

“The tradition continues,” Campbell said. “And so does our commitment to both the sport and our community.”
