Human Services Department is taking proposals through July 1 from contractors to lead cultural activities under its Medi-Cal partnership; paid by stipend.
HAPPY CAMP โ The Karuk Tribe Human Services Department is inviting proposals from traditional healers and natural helpers to lead cultural activities that support holistic health and expand access to culturally responsive care. The work is offered through a Request for Proposals tied to the Tribe’s Medi-Cal partnership, with the goal of reducing disparities in health outcomes by grounding wellness in Karuk life ways. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
Selected contractors will work with Human Services clinical and management staff to design and schedule activities, then facilitate them. Healers may respond to one or more activities, and some offerings may be gender-specific. All activities must take place within the Karuk Tribe’s aboriginal territory.
The Activities
The Tribe is looking for instruction and demonstration in a range of traditional practices, including necklace design and construction; storytelling and singing; Karuk language; basket making, including gathering and processing materials; traditional foods such as hunting, fishing, foraging, processing and preservation; gathering and processing medicinal materials; and regalia making. Preparation of indigenous foods, traditional card games and ceremony protocol may also be included.
Who Can Apply
Contractors must be a Tribal Member or Descendant of the Karuk Tribe, or hold documentation of Karuk CIB (Certificate of Indian Blood). They are responsible for scheduling, preparing and facilitating their activities in coordination with Human Services staff, and for helping collect the data needed to meet billing and grant requirements.
Requirements
Contractors must pass a Department of Justice background check; be certified โ or willing to become certified โ in infant, child and adult CPR and First Aid; adhere to HIPAA and tribal confidentiality policies; and complete ISSA training and Care Learning each year.
Each proposal must include demonstrated experience coordinating and facilitating the activities offered; a full description of the cultural activities and supplies involved; a proposed contract stipend with an attached price page; and the names, addresses and phone numbers of three references who can speak to the applicant’s cultural guidance and mentorship.
Preference and Fees
Indian Preference applies in the selection process under the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO) and the Indian Preference Act of 1934, based on funding-source requirements. Contracts exceeding $2,500 are subject to a 2 percent Tribal Employment Rights Fee under the TERO Ordinance.
