Obituary: RICHARD GROVER HUGHES

Richard Grover Hughes
December 25, 1928 – March 30, 2026

Richard Grover Hughes passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026, at his home in Mount Shasta, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 25, 1928, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, to Grover and Claire Hughes.

In 1936, Richard moved with his family to Dunsmuir when his father began working for the Southern Pacific Railroad. After the early passing of his father, Richard took on responsibility at a young age, going to work in the railroad yard at just 15 years old to help support his mother.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, with his service taking him to Korea. After returning home, he resumed his career with the Southern Pacific Railroad, where he dedicated 44 years of service before retiring in 1990.

In 1953, he met Maile Correa, the love of his life. They shared 64 years of marriage before her passing in 2017. Together, they built a life centered on family, hard work, and shared joys.

Following retirement, Richard found great pleasure in working with his HO train collection, fishing, traveling, and tending to his yard. He was known for his strong work ethic, quiet strength, and devotion to his family.

Richard is survived by his children: Vickie and Fred Erickson; Keith and Pat Hughes; and Kevin Hughes. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maile Hughes, and his sister, Geraldine Radan.

Family burial services will be held privately.
