Siskiyou County Sports Roundup Following Winter Break

Basketball

Mount Shasta Bears swept Etna in three of four games at Etna. The varsity boys won 58-29, the JV boys cruised to a 65-48 victory, and the JV girls also came away with a win.

Etna Lionsย split their week with losses to Mount Shasta and Weed. The varsity girls provided the lone bright spot against the Bears, defeating Mount Shasta 47-24 with mention of 18 points from Rhiley Walsh and 16 from Rachel Merrihew.

Against Weed, the Lions fell in both varsity contests. The varsity boys lost 40-65 despite 21 points from Collin Jenner, while the varsity girls dropped a 21-53 decision. The JV boys battled Weed to the final buzzer before falling 40-43, with Karson Hanson pouring in 20 points on four three-pointers.

Weed Cougars swept Etna on the road, with the varsity girls winning 53-21 and the varsity boys taking a 65-40 victory. The JV boys held on for a 43-40 win.

Happy Camp Indians opened the week with a commanding 70-18 victory over Dunsmuir on Tuesday before traveling to Hayfork on Thursday. The Lady Indians did not play this week.

Jordan Crocker earned Athlete of the Week honors after a perfect shooting performance against Dunsmuir. The senior guard knocked down four three-pointers en route to 16 points while adding two blocks and three steals.

In prior weeks, sophomore Jeremiah Guy and freshman Patricia Watson shared Athlete of the Week honors following Happy Camp’s victories over Big Valley (boys 81-54, girls 50-28). Guy contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Watson led all scorers with 26 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and a block.

Butte Valley Bulldogs varsity girls edged Tulelake 49-47 in a game decided at the buzzer. Macy Hensley hit the game-winning shot as time expired. The middle school teams fell short in their contests but showed strong effort throughout.

Yreka Minersย girls basketball snapped a home-court trend, defeating Anderson 41-38 on the road. Laci Nelmes led Yreka with 10 points and a career-high three steals, while Jaelyn Murieen added seven points and five assists. The win improved Yreka’s record to 12-10.

Alpine Racing & Snowboarding

Weed Cougarsย opened their alpine season at Mount Shasta Ski Park with strong performances. Junior skier Soren Sluss swept both slalom races with times of 34.30 and 35.76 seconds. Senior snowboarder Jett Marshall cracked the top 10 in giant slalom, placing seventh and ninth. The Cougars return to competition Tuesday, January 28 for snowboard slalom and ski giant slalom.

Mount Shasta High School competed in two races with strong results across all divisions.

Women’s Snowboard: Kaira Rehki swept both races, taking first in Race 1 and Race 2. Ava Weagraff placed fourth and fifth, respectively, while Riley Turner finished sixth and fourth.

Men’s Snowboard: Trevor Lanier won Race 1 and placed sixth in Race 2. Rocco Reynolds took seventh in Race 1, and Trenton Blankenship finished seventh in Race 2.

Men’s Team Skiing: Colton Gerdes placed second in Race 1 and third in Race 2. Chuck Johnson finished sixth and fourth in the two races.

Community Notes

Tulelake is seeking a junior high track coach for the 2026 season and a bus driver position with benefits including up to $19,120 annually in paid medical coverage. Contact the district office for details.

Tulelake Boosters presents Donkey Basketball on Monday, February 16 at 5 p.m. at Tulelake High School Gym. Advance tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for K-12 students, available at THS, TES, TID, Macy’s Flying Service, and Monte Johnson Insurance. Gate prices are $20 and $15.
