The Dunsmuir Rotary hosted “Breakfast with Santa” on Saturday to help support families during the holiday season. Children ate for free, and there was a minimal cost for adults to enjoy pancakes, eggs, sausage, and hot chocolate, milk, or coffee. Santa was there at the Dunsmuir Community Center during the breakfast to give out gifts and listen to children’s wishes for the Christmas holiday.

“We like to give back to the community,” David Clarno says. “We get infused with the spirit of the holiday season.”

The Dunsmuir Rotary has been hosting this event for about 20 years now, and the proceeds go toward the elementary school’s backpack program, where children take home backpacks filled with food for the weekend. This program was implemented after Dunsmuir Elementary School noticed that children were coming to school hungry because of food insecurity. “We realize that the holidays can be stressful for some families, so we want to help support them through the holidays,” Clarno says. They also had high school students involved by bringing the orders to the tables. It was a wonderful community effort that attracted families from other towns in South County to come and participate.

Along with food and gifts from Santa, they also had a table filled with children’s books that were free for the taking.
