Castella, CA โ A 31-year-old San Jose man was found dead in the McCloud River on Saturday after disappearing while fishing at a Shasta County nature preserve, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.
Kevin Zischke was reported missing Friday evening, September 26, around 10 PM, when friends and family couldn’t locate him at The Nature Conservancy-Kerry Landreth Preserve in the Shasta National Forest. The 1766 acre preserve sits on the McCloud River below McCloud Reservoir in a remote area with challenging terrain.
Sheriff’s deputies conducted an initial search Friday night but were unable to find Zischke in the difficult landscape, which features a single trail flanked by steep rock faces on both sides of the river.
Search and Rescue teams resumed efforts Saturday morning. Just after noon, they discovered Zischke’s body in the river approximately 100-150 yards downstream from where his group had been staying.
The Shasta County Coroner’s Office is investigating to determine the cause and manner of death. No further details have been released.

Jay, do you live in siskiyou county? Have you ever been to Castella? Or the Nature Preserve on the McCloud river. Based on your article i would venture the answer to that question is NO. It would appear you didn’t even look at a map. You might take a little more time to apply some professionalism to your journalist efforts.
Calm down. Itโs listed as being in Castella.
I appreciate that this was finally mentioned in the news but I think itโs wrong to withhold more complete information from the public. If it was a drowning, that seems simple enough to confirm. If not, the public should be warned.
