Commercial Fire Threatens Neighborhood Amid High Winds in Downtown Weed CA.

Multiple agencies respond as flames spread to vegetation

WEED, Calif. โ€” A commercial structure fire broke out Sunday morning at the intersection of Main Street and Camino Avenue in Weed, prompting a unified command response from multiple fire agencies and triggering evacuation warnings as gusty winds pushed flames into surrounding vegetation.

The fire was reported at 10:22 a.m., Weed City Fire Department worked in unified command with CAL FIRE’s Siskiyou Unit as challenging weather conditionsโ€”including southeast winds at 28 mph with gusts reaching 36 mphโ€”caused multiple spot fires to ignite in nearby vegetation, threatening both structures and State Responsibility Area (SRA) lands.

“Given the significant fire history in this area, we immediately requested major augmentation of state and local resources,” officials said in a statement. The response came as temperatures climbed to 73 degrees with relative humidity at 42 percent, creating conditions ripe for fire spread.

Retired from SanFrancisco Fire Department, and working as an investigator with the Mt. Shasta Fire Department, Captain Jim Beem is doing investigative work in the Weed, CA structural fire at the Black Butte Saloon.ย ย When asked about the cause of the fire, he said, “It’s under investigation.”ย ย Photo taken by Alex Brendel on September 28, 2025.

The massive response involved 16 engines, six water tenders, two ladder trucks, and more than 10 overhead personnel. CAL FIRE deployed both air and ground resources, including one air attack platform, two air tankers, and two helicopters to combat the blaze from above.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire officials expressed gratitude to the numerous agencies that responded, including Weed City Fire, CAL FIRE Siskiyou Unit, Fort Jones, McCloud Fire, Mount Shasta Fire, Gazelle Fire, South Yreka Fire, Dunsmuir Fire, Mayten Fire, Klamath National Forest, Lake Shastina Fire, Castella Fire, and Grenada Fire departments.
