February 12, 1952 – March 20, 2025
Michael “Pop” Eugene Lytken, a devoted outdoorsman who found his greatest joy sharing baseball games from the first base line with his loved ones, passed away unexpectedly on March 20, 2025, in Yreka, California, with his family by his side. He was 73 years old.
Born on February 12, 1952, in Yuba City, California, to Herbert and Alice Lytken, Michael grew up in Dunsmuir, where his passion for sports, particularly baseball, took root. His childhood days were filled with America’s favorite pastime, setting the stage for a lifetime of cherished memories at ballparks.
After graduating from Dunsmuir High School, Michael embarked on a remarkable 39-year career with Union Pacific Railroad. He made his home in Fort Jones, California, drawn to the year-round beauty of Scott Valley, where he could pursue his beloved outdoor activities.
Michael’s greatest legacy was his dedication to family. He took immense pride in his children and the people they became, teaching them to respect both the outdoors and others. Whether bass fishing with his son or cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events, Michael showed up for every important moment. His inability to resist anything sweet was matched only by his tendency to speak his mind, traits that endeared him to those who knew him best.
A lifelong San Francisco Giants fan, Michael could often be found sharing laughs and creating memories with loved ones at baseball games. His humor was infectious, and he had a special way of bringing joy to any gathering, making everyone around him feel welcomed and entertained.
Michael is survived by his children Michael Lytken (Angie), Hailee Wilcox, stepson Justin Roman; sister Vicky McElroy; grandchildren Bryce, Maddie, Brooke, Sierra, Ashlynn, and Tristin; and great-grandchild Melissa. He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Alice Lytken, and his daughter Melissa Lytken-Isbell.
A celebration of life is pending
