ETNA, CA – On March 24, 2025, Etna High School seniors Dani Miller and Ethan Knecthle transformed their senior project into a gripping, two-day event aimed at raising awareness about the devastating consequences of drunk driving. Their initiative, part of the renowned “Every 15 Minutes” program, left a lasting impression on students, staff, and the broader Siskiyou County community.

Throughout the first day, a bell tolled every 15 minutes—a somber reminder of the lives lost to impaired driving crashes nationwide. With each ring, a student was removed from class, symbolizing another preventable tragedy. The event concluded on day two with an emotional assembly and memorial service for the student actors. Parents of the “victims” delivered heartfelt speeches, joined by an attorney outlining the legal ramifications of DUIs and two individuals sharing real-life stories of loss caused by drunk driving.

Though entirely staged, the realism of the exercise hit home for many. “It was intense and emotional, but it really made you think about the choices you make,” said one student attendee. Sheriff’s Chaplains and school counselors were on hand throughout to support students processing the impactful scenes.

Miller and Knecthle’s efforts were bolstered by a wide array of local agencies nd organizations. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) – Yreka, led by Officer Grissom, played a pivotal role in coordinating the event, which was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Etna Police Department and Etna Fire Department provided critical support, lending their expertise and resources to ensure the reenactment was both realistic and educational. Additional assistance came from the Etna Ambulance Service, Fort Jones Fire Department, Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, Mercy Flights, and Girdner Funeral Chapel, among others.

“Dani and Ethan did an exemplary job orchestrating this event,” said Joy Isbell (Principal) “It was a memorable journey that highlighted the stakes of drunk driving in a way that words alone can’t convey. We’re incredibly proud of their leadership and thankful to everyone who helped make this possible.”

The “Every 15 Minutes” program, now a staple in many high schools, continues to educate young drivers about the ripple effects of a single reckless decision. For Etna High School, Miller and Knecthle’s project was a resounding success, leaving a legacy of awareness and responsibility for years to come.
