Duke Street Returns to Yreka

Ashland Blues Band Performance at Rain Rock Resort – Saturday, March 29, 7:00 PM

The Red Scarf Society for the Performing Arts is pleased to welcome Ashland blues band, Duke Street, for a return visit to Yreka on Saturday, March 29, at 7:00 pm at Rain Rock Resort, 777 Casino Way, Yreka, CA. Doors open at 6 PM; the show starts at 7 PM. There will be a reception following the performance that will provide the audience a chance to visit with the performers. Their appearance in Yreka will come after their role as the opening act for Jim Belushi at the Holly Theater in Medford on March 14th.

“A Duke Street performance cooks up an exciting groove and seasons the mixture to satisfy the tastes of old school hipsters and recent converts alike. These musicians have performed in the bands of some of the biggest names, including Robert Cray, Solomon Burke, Lowell Fulson and Grant Green. With musical influences from Howlin’ Wolf to Jimmy Witherspoon, Willie Dixon to Little Willie John, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, and back again, Duke Street brings a wide variety of Blues, R&B and Soul and delivers Stone Soul Satisfaction!”

Early R&B is the impetus behind Duke Street, first conceived by bassist Joe Cohoon and drummer Kent Clinkinbeard. The two discovered their creative connection while playing in various incarnations of local bands. “We discussed the idea of forming a band that used upright bass to recreate the sounds that might have been heard in R&B clubs while the music was emerging in the late ’40s and early ’50s….it’s music with a little less volume than the typical dance club band.”

With Duke Street, the pulse begins in the capable hands of drummer Kent Clinkinbeard who, along with bassist Joe Cohoon, keep the pulse, or groove, steady and strong.

The groove is given subtle complexity and structure by the chords and tasteful keyboard stylings of Michael Vannice. Through inspirational sonic explorations, saxophonist Gordon Greeley adds dimension and breadth to the Duke Street sound. On the guitar is Scott Rogers formerly of The Fabulous Savoys. At the top of this eclectic blend we add the soulful vocals and slide guitar of John Hauschild (aka ‘Johnny O.’). He says, “Most of my influences come from my love of gospel, blues and early soul music.”

Listen closely and you’ll find the group of experienced musicians is mixing genres to create a sound they believe hasn’t been heard before now. “We’re trying to create something a little different, but it all starts with something that was already there, which is fun.” So, whether the crowd wants to swing or hang loose, they can try out some new uptown moves or get up close and personal with a special someone, Duke Street will lead the way.
