Willow Creek School in Montague, California is seeking donations to build a special flower garden in tribute to Anne Frank. This rural school, founded in 1860 and located 18 miles from neighboring schools, serves as an extended family for its tight-knit community of students.
The garden project began after students in Catherine Gilbert’s 6th-8th grade class read “The Diary of Anne Frank.” A student named Ember proposed creating a living memorial garden after being deeply moved by Anne’s story. The diary prompted meaningful discussions about depression, self-advocacy, and historical awareness among the students.
This educational initiative has already integrated multiple subjects:
- Mathematics: 7th graders applied geometry to calculate the area and volume of soil needed
- Art: Students created plans for the garden layout and planting design
- Literature: The class studied both the original text and watched film adaptations
The paperclip, a symbol of resistance during World War II, has become a meaningful emblem for both students and faculty throughout this project.
Your contribution will help complete this garden that serves both as a memorial and an ongoing educational space for current and future students. The garden will provide a physical space for reflection and learning about history, resilience, and hope.
