It seems Sacramento has finally discovered what Jefferson Territory has known all along. On Valentine’s Day, Assembly Bill 666 was introduced to make Bigfoot California’s official state cryptid.

For Happy Camp, where our proud Bigfoot statue has greeted visitors for years, this feels like catching up to the obvious. Along the 89-mile Bigfoot Scenic Byway, locals share knowing smiles about the timing. After all, Jefferson Territory’s relationship with its most famous resident has been going strong since before California had official symbols of any kind.
For our corner of California, where Bigfoot has always been more than just a legend, official recognition would simply confirm what every Jefferson Territory gift shop, diner, and campfire gathering has celebrated for decades. The bill’s timing – Valentine’s Day – should spark plenty of local humor about Sacramento’s sudden romance with our resident forest giant. But as any Jefferson Territory resident will tell you, Bigfoot’s heart has always been here.
AB 666 is currently making its way through the 2025-2026 legislative session. Local Bigfoot sightings continue on their usual schedule.
