In a significant drug bust, Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Deputies intercepted over 2,600 grams of fentanyl during a routine traffic stop near Mount Shasta, potentially preventing what authorities estimate to be more than 1.3 million lethal doses from reaching communities.
The early morning incident began when a deputy noticed a white Toyota Camry traveling on Interstate 5 with an equipment violation. What started as a simple traffic stop for a non-functioning license plate light quickly evolved into a major drug seizure, demonstrating how routine law enforcement work can lead to significant public safety outcomes.
The Traffic Stop
At approximately 2:10 AM, a Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Deputy initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle violation under California Vehicle Code 24601. The vehicle’s occupants included:
- Driver: Jimmy H Gutierrez, age 20
- Passenger: David Hernandez, age 22
- A juvenile passenger (identity protected due to age)
During the initial contact, several red flags prompted further investigation. The driver was operating the vehicle without a valid license, and the group provided vague travel plans, indicating they were traveling from Richmond, California, to an unspecified destination.
Discovery and Seizure
The situation escalated when the deputy detected a strong marijuana odor and observed several bags of marijuana in plain view within the vehicle. These observations established probable cause for a vehicle search, which yielded:
- 2,609.9 grams of fentanyl
- 576.8 grams of marijuana
- Drug distribution equipment including an electronic scale
- Multiple smaller bags suggesting intent to distribute
The fentanyl seizure is particularly noteworthy, as the amount recovered could potentially produce over 1.3 million lethal doses. This quantity highlights the devastating impact that successful distribution of these substances could have had on communities throughout California.
The adult occupants, Gutierrez and Hernandez, were taken into custody and booked into the Siskiyou County jail on multiple charges:
- Possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell
- Transportation of controlled substances through noncontiguous counties
- Possession of marijuana for sale
The juvenile passenger was processed through the Siskiyou County Juvenile Probation system and received citations for possession and transportation of controlled substances through noncontiguous counties.
This seizure represents more than just a local drug bust – the presence of both fentanyl and marijuana, combined with packaging materials and scales, indicates a sophisticated operation rather than personal use. This case exemplifies how Interstate 5 continues to serve as a major artery for drug trafficking operations in California.
The Siskiyou County LEO’s continues to work diligently to intercept illegal narcotics and disrupt drug trafficking operations that threaten safety. How routine traffic enforcement can lead to major drug interdiction successes.
