The California High School Rodeo Association (CHSRA) District 1 Junior High Rodeo #5 in Red Bluff drew impressive talent from across Northern California and Southern Oregon on November 16, 2024, with over 30 young athletes competing across multiple events.
The rough stock arena saw Jake McGrew of Vacaville claim victory in Junior Saddle Bronc Steer Riding with a 57-point ride. While both Junior Bull Riding and Junior Bareback Steer Riding had entries, no qualified rides were recorded.
Local talent shone bright in the speed events, with Cottonwood’s Sadie Vandeburgh capturing the Junior Barrel Racing title, clocking an impressive 14.412 seconds against a deep field of 34 competitors. Brooklyn Mueller of Red Bluff demonstrated exceptional horsemanship by winning the Junior Pole Bending with a time of 21.431 seconds.
The timed events showcased the region’s rising stars. Montague’s dynamic duo of Colt Bray and Carson Cash dominated Junior Team Roping with a winning time of 7.51 seconds. Cash also proved his versatility by winning Junior Chute Dogging in 3.53 seconds. L.J. Kanakis from Corning claimed the Junior Boys Breakaway title with a swift 3.67-second run.
In the goat tying arena, Kaydin Gleason demonstrated exceptional skill, winning the Junior Girls division with a remarkable 9.09-second run. Royce Ginochio topped the Junior Boys division with a time of 13.45 seconds.
The competition featured strong representation from multiple communities, including athletes from Tehama, Orland, Oroville, and even Medford, Oregon. Medford’s Brynna Skeeters impressed with a second-place finish in Barrel Racing (14.469) and fifth in Girls Goat Tying (11.12).
The event highlighted the depth of talent in District 1, with particularly strong showings in:
