The Lumberjack Fiesta Days traditional have tournaments that many regular players around Siskiyou County look forward to competing in each year. The corn hole tournament has not been around as long as the Papa Anderson Memorial Softball Tournament nor the Harold Benedict Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, but it has become just as popular. This year there were 26 teams participating in the corn hole competition.
The Softball tournament this year was an intense and exciting 2-day affair. The tournament started with McCloud Market Tucci Camp playing against the Shoobie Chippers. The game was a very close game with lots of runs by Tucci Camp early in the game with Eric Clemens hitting a grand slam when the bases were loaded but then the Shoobie Chippers caught up and surpassed them ending the game 25 Shoobie Chippers-19 Tucci Camp. “It was the best inning Tucci Camp ever had scoring 15 runs in the first inning,” said Reno DeBon Jr.
The Championship game was between Kyle’s Krew and Mountian Top Athletics. Mountain Top Athletics lost their 2nd game and had to play and win 6 games in a row took get a chance against Kyle’s Krew for the win. Kyle’s Krew who was sponsored by Wonderland Distributing, 1st place beating out Mountain Top Athletics 13 to 12. All Tourney were Hudson Porteous and Brandon Declusin.
Kyle’s Krew’s catcher and manager, Kyle Reed has been fighting luekimia cancer having bone marrow transplants 4 times. It was a special triumph for Kyle who played throughout the tournament.
The 16 teams that participated were McCloud Market’s Tucci Camp, Shoobie Chippers, Sis-Q-Fire, Solanos, 1 Pitcher 9 Mugs, Got Wood, Mountain Top Athletics, McCloud River Inn Red Bands, Old Engilsh, Mount Shasta Supermarket, All-Trade Warriors, Hoots Boys, and Blue Collar.
On Saturday of the tournament there was a freak accident. Donovan Ribb hit a ground ball and while running to 1st base, he was hit in the head by the shortstop throwing to get him out. He was transported by ambulance to Mt. Shasta Dignity Hospital and then to Redding for surgery. Not having insurance, his teammates are asking for any assistance to help cover his medical expenses.
