As part of the Governor’s California Climate Commitment, the recently signed 2024 budget agreement maintains $2.6 billion over seven years, from 2021-22 through 2027-28, to protect Californians from wildfires and improve forest health. This is in addition to $200 million per year for healthy forest and fire prevention programs, including prescribed fire and other fuel reduction projects
California has developed the world’s largest aerial firefighting force to combat its growing wildfire threat. This impressive fleet combines cutting-edge technology with strategic planning to protect communities and natural resources across the state.
At its core, CAL FIRE operates over 60 permanent aircraft, supplemented by contracted vehicles when needed. The fleet includes a mix of helicopters, air tankers, and other specialized aircraft. Recently, the state has expanded its night-flying capabilities, with eight helitack bases now equipped for 24-hour operations.
Innovation plays a key role in California’s approach. The state employs 159 drones for tasks like aerial ignition and wildfire containment. Advanced tools such as the Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System (FIRIS) and Tecnosylva Wildfire Projection Tool provide real-time mapping and prediction of fire spread.
Partnerships enhance these capabilities, with the Department of Defense offering satellite mapping support. The state is also in the process of acquiring seven C-130 aircraft from the federal government, further boosting its firefighting power.
Public engagement is another crucial aspect. A redesigned fire.ca.gov website offers real-time wildfire information, including live camera feeds and aircraft tracking.
California’s investment in this unparalleled aerial firefighting force demonstrates its commitment to tackling the increasing wildfire threat. As climate change intensifies fire risks, this approach serves as a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
