YREKA, Calif. (AP) — A McCloud man has been arrested in connection with a 2015 double homicide in Wyoming, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
Douglas Smith, 68, was taken into custody on a warrant alleging two counts of first-degree murder. The arrest stems from a cold case in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where two men were fatally shot at a coin shop nearly nine years ago.
Siskiyou County deputies assisted Cheyenne Police detectives in apprehending Smith, who is now awaiting extradition to Wyoming.
The case dates back to July 20, 2015, when George Manley, 76, and Dwight Brockman, 67, were found dead at The Coin Shop in downtown Cheyenne. Investigators believe Smith, who was the initial 911 caller, was responsible for the killings.
Cheyenne Police Chief Mark Francisco praised the inter-agency cooperation, saying, “Strong partnerships have resulted in an arrest, which is a step closer to closure for our community.”
The arrest comes after Cheyenne detectives revisited the case evidence in March 2023, utilizing new technologies and investigative techniques. The investigation involved collaboration with multiple law enforcement agencies across several states.
Siskiyou County officials did not provide details on Smith’s local ties or how long he had been residing in McCloud.
The case has been turned over to the Laramie County District Attorney’s Office in Wyoming for prosecution.
