On June 6, 2024, at approximately 10:51 a.m., the Mt. Shasta Police Department dispatch received multiple 911 reports of a male subject in a white Jeep discharging a firearm near Berry Street and Mill Street. A Mt. Shasta Police Officer was dispatched to the area, with subsequent reports of gunfire from Smith Street. Assistance was requested from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office and the Mt. Shasta California Highway Patrol. Local schools were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
At approximately 11:05 a.m., the Mt. Shasta California Highway Patrol located a vehicle matching the description on Mill Street and initiated a felony vehicle stop at Water Street and South Mt. Shasta Blvd. The male subject, identified as 33-year-old Samuel Richard Bal from Yreka, was taken into custody by a Mt. Shasta Police Department officer. Approximately eight rounds had been fired, and a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson firearm, lawfully registered to Bal, was recovered from the vehicle. Once the scene was secured, schools were advised to lift the lockdown.
Bal is being booked on charges including Willful Discharge of a Firearm in a Grossly Negligent Manner, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Brandishing a Firearm in a School Zone, and Willful and Malicious Discharge of a Firearm from a Motor Vehicle at a Person.
