Yreka, Calif., August 2, 2023— The USDA Forest Service is offering in-person workshops and webinars on how to prepare an application for a Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG). The 2023 open period for grant application submittal is July 31 to October 31, 2023. The CWDG program is intended to help at-risk-local communities and tribes plan for and reduce the risk of wildfire on private lands. Non-profits, state, county, and community government agencies and Tribes are eligible to apply for grants. Workshops will be available in communities in Northern California and Southern Oregon as well as virtually.
With the goal of reducing the risk of wildfire to people and private property, grants can be used to develop or update Community Wildfire Protection Plans to identify high risk areas. Additionally, grants can be used to implement projects described in Community Wildfire Protection Plans– such as support for development and implementation of wildfire related building codes and standards, outreach to community members through programs like Firewise USA and training people to assess wildfire risk and implement mitigation measures. To help understand the scope of the grant funding, in 2022 the initial round of approved grants funded 100 projects for a total of $197 million. Projects funded in 2022 can be viewed at https://www.fs.usda.gov/managing-land/fire/grants/funded-proposals
In-person grant application workshops will be offered in Northern California and Southern Oregon from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Pacific as follows:
- August 14—Modoc National Forest headquarters at 225 West 8th Street, Alturas, CA
- August 15—Klamath River District Office, Fremont-Winema National Forest, 2819 DahliaStreet, Klamath Falls, OR
- August 16—Klamath National Forest headquarters, 1711 South Main Street, Yreka, CA
- August 17–Hoopa Fire Department, 11120 CA Highway 96, Hoopa, CA
- August 18—Community Room, Trinity County PUD, 26 Ponderosa Lane, Weaverville, CA
Advance registration for the in-person grant workshops is encouraged though not required.
