Dunsmuir Elementary Celebrates Dr. Seuss’s 119th Birthday

Dunsmuir Elementary School stopped classes for an hour on Thursday to host Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Bash which lands on March 2nd.

For the past 10 years, the Student Council has been working together as a team, being creative by putting on this yearly event for the Wildcats and inviting parents to join in the fun.

The auditorium was festively decorated and filled with Dr. Seuss games such as Lorax orange making, face painting, photo booth, salt painting, fishy fishing, hula hoop and ring toss, decorated Lorax cookies, including themed ‘Seussical’ balancing station, Ooblck station and many other sensory activities. The students dressed up each day for spirit day that themed Dr. Seuss. Being born in 1904, Dr. Seuss would be 119 years old today.

Teacher paraprofessional Kathleen Shirley, who also oversees the associated student body (ASB) says, “The students learn responsibility as they work hard to create this amazing opportunity that they otherwise wouldn’t have.”

Staff member Linda Guzman says, ” The timing of this event couldn’t have come at a better time for all this activity. We had to have 2 days off with all this snow.”

Along with the decorations, the Wildcat Mascot made an appearance along with a surprise visit from the Grinch himself with his dog Max in tow.

Assistant Principal Mandy Leahy, who was once a Wildcat herself, says, “Dunsmuir Elementary School is also like a family. I am happy to join the Wildcat team as we work together towards the school-wide goals. Dunsmuir Elementary offers so many opportunities for learning like the outdoor classroom, the science program and the extended learning opportunities that this school offers during the school breaks. The students learn responsibility by creating and setting up these events and cleaning up afterwards. They also volunteer to help clean up after lunch.”

Each month there is an award assembly where students from each classroom are awarded with character traits such as empathy, gratitude and attendance awards.

Other upcoming events at the elementary school include themed dances, Family Math Night on Pie day(March 14th), the 8th grade trip to Washington DC over spring break,  and  ‘Water Fun Day’ on the last day of school.
