Etna High School wrestling has had a strong start to their 2025-26 season, bringing home medals from their first two tournaments.
The team opened at Trinity High School in Weaverville on December 6, earning nine medals.
Girls results: Kate Early (105 lbs) earned first place, Arabelle Starr (135 lbs) third, Carmie Downey (155 lbs) third, and Shelby Martin (155 lbs) fourth.
Boys results: Blake Hansen (150 lbs) took first place, Cruz Downey (165 lbs) first, Theran Isbell (175 lbs) first, Kale Facey (165 lbs) third, and Aiden Beal (132 lbs) fourth.
Blake Hansen was awarded wrestler of the week by the coaching staff for winning his first gold medal in high school competition.
“This was a good first tournament, a good opening for us,” said head coach Dave Downey. “We got to see a lot of people from within our league.”
The team followed up with another impressive performance last weekend at the Shawn Wood Invite at Modoc High School in Alturas, competing against more than 15 teams from California and Oregon.
Boys results: Blake Hansen (144 lbs) placed third.
Girls results: Kate Early (105 lbs) second, Shelby Martin (155 lbs) second, and Carmie Downey (155 lbs) third.
Shelby Martin was named wrestler of the week by the coaching staff.
“Kate wrestled a really tough week; she ran into some really tough wrestlers and did good,” Coach Downey said.
This coming weekend, the team faces its toughest challenge yet at the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff at Grants Pass High School, where wrestlers will compete for the coveted Snowglobe trophy. The two-day tournament will feature eight mats.
“This will be a competitive tournament; it will be our first real test of the season,” Coach Downey said.
Competition runs December 19-20.
