College of the Siskiyous Holds Groundbreaking Event for New Student Housing Facility

Weed / COS – College of the Siskiyous is proud to announce a new student housing development aimed at addressing critical housing shortages in the Weed community. The initiative, launched in collaboration with the City of Weed, represents a major step toward supporting both student success and community recovery.

Over the past decade, the City of Weed has faced significant challenges due to two major wildfires that destroyed homes and disrupted lives. These events drastically reduced the availability of local housing, making it increasingly difficult for students, families, and new residents to find a place to live.

Recognizing the urgency of the issue, College of the Siskiyous is taking the lead in developing housing that will directly support its student population while contributing to broader community revitalization efforts.

“This project is more than just student housing—it’s a commitment to the future of our students and the resilience of our community,” said Dr. Char Perlas, President of College of the Siskiyous. “We’re proud to partner with the City of Weed to help rebuild and strengthen our region.”

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility was held on October 10, bringing together local, state, and federal representatives, along with many local business owners and community members. The event marked a significant milestone in the college’s continued efforts to serve as a hub for growth, education, and recovery in Siskiyou County.

The new 36,000-square-foot housing unit will include 83 rooms (6 Single Capacity, 77 Double Capacity), along with one ARD apartment, three community kitchens, laundry facilities, study and game rooms, and shared community spaces designed to foster a supportive and engaging environment for students. The project is 100% state-funded, with a total investment of approximately $30 million. In compliance with state law, the housing will be classified as affordable, ensuring access for students in need.

Construction is now officially underway, and the college anticipates opening the new housing facility in Fall 2027. The student housing development marks a significant milestone in the college’s mission to provide accessible education and support services while playing an active role in regional development.
