Klamath National Forest: Wildland firefighters continue to respond to multiple wildfires following lightning storm

YREKA, Calif., July 2, 2025 โ€” Wildland Firefighters continue to respond to multiple wildfires on the Klamath National Forest with a coordinated effort of ground crews and aerial resources following widespread thunderstorms and lightning on the afternoon and evening of June 30 and July 1, 2025. Over the last 24 hours there has been 11,965 lightning strikes in northern California.

A total of 11 fires have been confirmed on the #KlamathNF over that last 24 hours, the largest being the 20 acre Summit Fire on the Salmon Scott River Ranger District in the Marble Mountain Wilderness.

Current fires by district:

Salmon-Scott River Ranger District

  • Summit Fireย – Located west of the Pacific Crest Trail in the vicinity of the upper Wooley Creek drainage about two miles west of Cliff and Campbell lakes. It is burning in the footprint of the 2014 Man Fire with numerous snags. It is estimated at 20 acres with smokejumpers and one hotshot crew on scene. Multiple helicopters and air tankers have been working the fire today to limit itโ€™s spread while fireline is constructed by smokejumpers and hotshots. Two additional ground crews are enroute today.ย 
  • Grouse Fireย – Located three miles south of Eddy Gulch Lookout and held at one tenth an acre. Containment line is around the fireโ€™s perimeter and firefighters are mopping up.

Happy Camp/Oak Knoll Ranger District

  • Caroline Fireย – Located south of Seiad on Caroline Creek, estimated size is 2 acres. Two crews and a dozer are committed to this fire and are receiving support from a helicopter.
  • Springs Fireย – Located 5 miles south of Grider Creek Campground, estimated size of one-quarterย acre, burning in brush and dead and down fuel with smokejumpers on scene.ย 
  • Shanty Fireย โ€“ Located east of Grider Ridge, estimated size of 1.8ย acres. This fire has smokejumpers committed, and line construction is ongoing. It consists of three small fires burning in brush and snags.
  • Ridge Fireย โ€“ Located in the Limestone Bluffs area of Grider Ridge, estimated size of one-quarterย acre. An engine crew, district timber employees and a falling module are committed.
  • Jackson Fireย โ€“ Located north of Slater Butte and contained at one-tenth and acre. This fire is contained and in patrol status.
  • No-Name Fireย – Located southeast of the Grider Creek campground. Wildland Fire staff areย headingย to the fire in the morning.
  • Thompson Fireย – Located on Thompson Timber Sale, held at one-half acre with a containment line around it. Wildland fire engines are engaged in heavy mop-up.
  • Timโ€™s Fire โ€“ย Locatednear Timโ€™s Peak, about four miles northeast of Slater Butte estimated at 1 acre. The fireย is creeping and smoldering in brush, grass, and timber. Currently there are Heli-rappelers are on scene.

Goosenest Ranger District

  • Nest Fireย – Located on the south side of Goosenest Mountain and is now contained at one-tenth acre.

Weather Outlook
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for this afternoon due to the potential for another round of thunderstorms, some of which may be dry with strong, gusty outflows. The highest risk areas include Siskiyou and Klamath counties.
