Mount Shasta Climbing Rangers and CHP Air Operations recently conducted their annual mountain rescue training, preparing first responders for the upcoming climbing season in Siskiyou County. The joint exercise at Mott Airport focused on helicopter safety, landing zone planning, hoist systems, and high-altitude rescue hazards.
The training brought together multiple agencies including the Search and Rescue team, Shasta Mountain Guides, SWS Mountain Guides, and USFS Climbing Rangers—groups that typically respond together during mountain emergencies. This interagency collaboration is critical for ensuring rescuers can work cohesively in high-consequence environments like Mount Shasta’s 14,000-foot peak.
Search and Rescue volunteers had the opportunity to experience the helicopter hoist system firsthand, with one participant noting the harness “feels pretty much like a lounge chair” while offering spectacular aerial views. The training is considered a favorite annual exercise among participants.
As climbing season begins, these coordinated preparations help ensure rescue operations on Mount Shasta and other high peaks will be conducted safely and efficiently when needed.
