Obituary: Harriett Emma (Roff) Quigley

Harriett Emma (Roff) Quigley passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 95 with family by her side on Friday, March 13, 2026.

Harriett was born on Miner’s Creek at her family’s ranch on September 20, 1930. Her dad was a miner, originally from Cecilville. Her mother grew up on the ranch and became a school teacher that taught at different one-room school houses in the area.

Harriett graduated from Etna High School, which at that time was located on the corner of Church and Cleveland Streets in Etna.

After she graduated high school, she married the love of her life, Ed Quigley. They made their home in Etna and had two children, Ron and Kathy. Ed and Harriett loved the outdoors and were often found hunting, fishing, and horseback riding in the Marbles and Trinity Alps.

Harriett worked at different jobs in Scott Valley. Some of those jobs included: a telephone operator for Siskiyou Telephone Co., bank teller at Scott Valley Bank, and she delivered the mail on the mail route when she retired.

After retiring, Ed and Harriett went on many adventures with their travel trailer or motorhome, and enjoyed being campground hosts. They were happily married for 72 years and were always together wherever they went.

When Harriett couldn’t be outside working in her garden or flower beds, she had a passion for reading. You would often find her checking out 4 or 5 books at a time. She loved local history and was a member of The Native Daughters of the Golden West Eschscholtzia Parlor #112 for 55 years. She was very knowledgeable about the Karuk language and spoke it often. Paintin pictures, basket weaving, hunting Icknish, Red Bells, Bear Grass, and Azaleas was always an adventure with Harriett.

She was known to her family as “Nana.” She will be missed dearly by her family, friends, and loyal dog, Touser.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Quigley; parents, Dan and Mary Roff; and sisters, Eva Burton and Bernita Tickner.

Harriett leaves behind her children: Ronald (Sandy) Quigley, Kathy (Jerry) Durett; grandchildren: Debra (Steve) Froelich, Heather (Bob) Norton, Darci (Robert) Chesnick, Heidi (Brian) Edwards, Keith (Nicole) Quigley, and Dustin Durett; as well as many great-grandchildren and nephews.

A memorial graveside service will be held for Harriett on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 1 pm in Etna Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Harriett’s name can be made to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka or Stable Hands, 1011 4th Street #3, Yreka.
