In a populated area one might see pigeons everyday. If you raised pigeons as a kid, you might want to raise them when you get older. Believe it or not, pigeons were used in the military by some nations in times of war to carry messages in a capsule attached to their legs. Some were shot down or wounded, some were in our history books and even in museums. They saved many lives, and several received medals noting them as heroes. The pigeons were 90% successful in their missions. The internet has information when you go to ‘ww2pigeons’.

Pigeon racing is a popular sport today. Depending on the race, one can be rewarded with lots of money when one’s bird is the first one to return to the loft and clocks in with the magnetic bands attached to his/her leg. Sometimes the race distances are from 150 miles to 600 miles and anything in between.
The Western Open is a ‘bragging rights race’ consisting of several states which include the states of Washington, Oregon, Utah, Nevada, California and any other state that is within the same distances of flight. The Western Open race starts in Winnemucca, Nevada.
