Strong early Chinook returns offer encouraging signs for the 2025 spawning season
The 2025 fall salmon run in the Klamath River system shows robust activity as the season progresses into late September. Based on the latest California Department of Fish and Wildlife monitoring data through September 25, 2025:
Shasta River leads the count with 2,630 adult Chinook salmon observed since monitoring began August 28 – a substantial increase from the 800 counted just a week earlier on September 17. This represents one of the stronger early-season returns in recent years when compared to historical averages.
Scott River has recorded 13 adult Chinook since operations began September 23, while Jenny Creek has observed 1 adult Chinook since starting September 19.
Bogus Creek monitoring just began September 26, with data still being processed.
Coho Salmon Status
Notably, no Coho salmon have been observed at any monitoring stations through September 25, which is consistent with their typical later arrival pattern in the season.
