SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 263 into law on Native American Day, advancing California’s commitment to protect salmon populations and habitat in the Klamath River watershed.
The legislation, authored by Assemblymember Chris Rogers (D-Santa Rosa), builds on recent conservation victories in the region, particularly the removal of dams on the Klamath River that has led to dramatic improvements in salmon habitat. The bill furthers the state’s promise to protect these critical fish populations that hold deep cultural significance for tribal communities.
“Native American Day is a celebration of Native culture and achievements, an acknowledgment of what Native peoples have endured, and a day to honor their resilience and all that they’ve protected,” said Governor Newsom during the signing ceremony at the State Capitol, where Native American leaders from across California gathered for the celebration.
