DUNSMUIRย – The train has been derailed since at least 7:30 am, Monday September 1, 2025; A single-car train derailment in Dunsmuir’s South Railyard is blocking two major rail crossings and backing up freight traffic on Monday, September 1st, with the disruption expected to continue for most of the day.
The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that both the Butterfly Avenue and Scherrer Avenue railroad crossings are blocked due to the derailment. Residents needing to cross the tracks are being directed to use the Crag View railroad crossing as an alternate route.

According to eyewitness reports, a refrigerated car (reefer car) jumped the tracks on a southbound Union Pacific freight train. The derailed car was positioned nine cars back from the front engine when the incident occurred.
“It’s gonna be most of the day,” a UP worker told a local observer at the scene, indicating the lengthy process ahead to clear the derailment and restore normal rail traffic.
The derailed car has not caused any additional problems beyond backing up rail traffic through the area. Rail crossings are expected to reopen by mid-afternoon, though the exact timeline remains fluid as crews work to rerail the car and clear the track.
This is a developing story and will be updated if more information becomes available.
